Topličice, Semič

Topličice (; formerly also ''Male Toplice'';〔''Intelligenzblatt zur Laibacher Zeitung'', no. 141. 24 November 1849, p. 47.〕〔Simonič, Ivan. 1935. "Kočevarji v luči krajevnih in ledinskih imen." ''Glasnik Muzejskega društva za Slovenijo'' 16: 61–81 and 106–123, p. 73.〕 (ドイツ語:Töplitzel),〔''Leksikon občin kraljestev in dežel zastopanih v državnem zboru,'' vol. 6: ''Kranjsko''. 1906. Vienna: C. Kr. Dvorna in Državna Tiskarna, p. 6.〕〔Ferenc, Mitja. 2007. ''Nekdanji nemški jezikovni otok na kočevskem''. Kočevje: Pokrajinski muzej, p. 4.〕 Gottscheerish: ''Teplitzle''〔Petschauer, Erich. 1980. "Die Gottscheer Siedlungen – Ortsnamenverzeichnis." In ''Das Jahrhundertbuch der Gottscheer'' (pp. 181–197). Klagenfurt: Leustik.〕) is a remote abandoned settlement in the Municipality of Semič in southern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region.〔(Semič municipal site )〕 Its territory is now part of the village of Sredgora. It lies in a narrow dry valley 1 km east of Sredgora.〔Savnik, Roman, ed. 1971. ''Krajevni leksikon Slovenije'', vol. 2. Ljubljana: Državna založba Slovenije, p. 61.〕
==Name==
The name ''Topličice'' and names like it (e.g., ''Dolenjske Toplice'') are derived from the Slovene common noun
*''toplica'' 'hot spring', referring to a local geological feature.〔〔Snoj, Marko. 2009. ''Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen''. Ljubljana: Modrijan and Založba ZRC, p. 431.〕 The German name ''Töplitzel'' and Gottscheerish name ''Teplitzle'' are derivd from the Slovenian name.〔 Both the Slovene and German names are diminutives (with the suffixes ''-ice'' and ''-el''), also reflected in the obsolete Slovene name ''Male Toplice'', all literally 'little hot spring(s)'. The diminutive form may have also helped differentiate the settlement from many others named ''Toplice/Töplitz''.〔Bleier, Reinhard. 1982. "Unerkannte Siedlungsnamenherkunft in Gottscheer Familiennamen." ''Beiträge zur Namenforschung'' 18: 391–432, p. 392.〕
